What it is
A fraud rival says the phenomenon was produced deliberately. The catalog’s clearest cases sit here: a confessed photographic hoax, a faith healer fed names through a hidden earpiece, cold reading dressed as clairvoyance, relics manufactured or retro-attributed centuries after the fact, and ‘blood’ that laboratory work identifies as pigment — pigmented bacteria such as Serratia marcescens, or fungus from handling.
How the story gets built
Manufactured wonders usually share a structure: an emotionally compelling presentation, control of the conditions of observation, refusal of any independent or controlled test, and a narrative that grows in the retelling. Recognizing the structure is what lets us separate a built story from an open one.
The honest limit
Fraud has to be demonstrated, not assumed. “A clever person could have faked this” is not evidence that anyone did, and treating every unexplained case as a presumed hoax is its own kind of dishonesty. We reserve this rival for cases where the deception is shown — a confession, a caught method, a lab result — not merely imaginable.
How this rival is scored here
A demonstrated fraud collapses the evidence side of a grade outright — the entries resting on this rival are the ones scoring in the single digits. Where fraud is only conceivable, not shown, it does not move the verdict.
